As stated in the title and not to be redundant if you are reading this you are probably at COCOVINO LA or you follow our website in either case we are glad you are here and we would like to thank you for supporting COCOVINO LA if you are there/here. About ten years ago after working in the restaurant industry for twice as long I moved to Long Beach. The first goal was to sell and promote my mother’s art she had been a poet, painter, and astrologer and had painted prolifically, however she had died many years before and I wasn’t sure what to do with her art. I had painted as well but not as seriously as she had. So I tried my hand at it again while at the same time still trying to promote hers, a couple of years had gone by and I had minimal success with her art or mine. So I decided to study art and was excited about how much information was at our fingertips. As I started studying art and artists from the “beginning” and then suddenly forward to contemporary artist and then bouncing back and forth and then back to the beginning looking at African and Asian art in particular. I came across the artist Gerhard Richter and I was suspended by his abstract style and technique. So while working on visual art, from digital, to photography to collage I was trying to find my voice as a painter. Some of my digital and collage piece were licensed and sold but painting was my passion. I just hadn’t found my style.

As a painter I was influenced by other artists like, Jackson Pollock, Basquiat, Georgia O’Keeffe even Banksy but none of them had influenced me as much as Asian culture especially Taoism and Buddhism did/do. From Martial Arts early in my life to meditation now, and my practice of Zazen, I sought to incorporate those aspects to and in my art. Some Abstract art spoke to my Taoist and Buddhist sensibilities, like being in the moment, removing what is unnecessary, revealing what you have hidden from yourself etcetera. Still my earlier work were more imitations of Gerhard Richter than they were my originals for lack of a better term and expression.

Where other artists especially male abstract artist decided to concentrate on the line or linear aspects, I decided to concentrate on the circle and the sphere. Hence “The Sphere Abstracts,” I thought about how important the circle and sphere were prominent in African and Asian cultures. Especially in their art and symbolism and I decided to explore those spectrums in my art. Of course I thought about Aristotle who divided his view of the universe into terrestrial spheres , who believed that the four classical elements make up everything in the terrestrial spheres which were considered “corruptible”, those elements being earth, air, fire, and water. If you look closely you can see in my work those four elements being represented in some cases one element, in other cases all.

However my personal goal was to use the sphere to celebrate the power and influence of the feminine.
